Last week, we started a celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss. We had theme days such as Wacky Wednesday (siily socks), Theodore Thursday (Biography of Dr. Seuss), and Funny Friday (green eggs & ham and oobleck). Today we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with roving stations packed with activities, reading more of his books, and ended our celebration with a birthday cake shaped as a hat. This was a fun unit for all of us and we all enjoyed learning about Dr. Seuss and reading all of his books. HAPPY 105th BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!!!

Edible Art

Our class painted with edible art today. This was a simple mixture of light corn syrup and food coloring. Everyone had a blast and when all paintings were done, we got to lick our fingers and EAT?!?!? our paint.

Secret Valentines

We received secret Valentine notes from the 1st graders. It was fun getting new notes and trying to figure out who our secret Valentines were :)
We also gave secret notes & treats to the Kindergarten students of Mrs. Ngewakl's class everyday and on Friday (2/13), we walked to their class and surprised them with treats and a poem.

"Roses are Red, Violets are Blue....We think you're sweet, so here is a treat!"

Please join us on Thursday, January 29th @ 5pm for Parent Literacy Night where we focus on Word Knowledge/Word Play & talk about how we can work together at home and at school to help our children achieve the highest possible level of understanding. I assure you that the 1 hour that you spend with us will be worthwhile :)

Thanksgiving Parade

Our K-3rd Graders competed in a Turkey Hat Contest which were judged on November 24th. We then had a parade to show our hats to everyone. Congratulations to our class winners...Elian Taitano for making it to the Honorable Mention, Aira Abreu for winning 3rd place, Jacob Canape for winning 2nd place, and FLOYD ANTHONY LIM II for winning 1st place! Thank you to all who participated in the family project of the month!

After reading "Hedgehog Bakes a Cake", we baked our very own Yellow Cake. The students were given the opportunity to measure their ingredients, mix their batter, and EAT their cake! This was a fun activity for all of us. :)

Classroom Management

Rm. B-1's Golden Rule:

"No one has the right to prevent someone else from learning."

General Rules

Be a good listener.
When you want to talk, raise your hand and wait to be called on.
Keep hands, feet, and all objects to yourself.

"STAR Chart"

On a classroom chart, each child begins his/her day at the top of the "STAR" chart. There are 8 steps on our chart. If a rule is broken, the student(s) will be asked to move his/her star down the next step. This will be repeated every time a rule is broken. Each step has a consequence. They are as follows:

5th Step-Lose Whole Recess

6th Step-Time Out (fill out reflection form to be signed by parents)

I keep track of which step each student lands on at the end of the day. At the end of each day, your child will be rewarded as follows:

Every Friday, Rm. B-1 will have a raffle drawing in which prizes will be given out for good behavior.

With this system, I am reinforcing positive behavior. If your child persists in negative behaviors which prevent other children from learning, I will contact you. Please reinforce at home the idea that each child is responsible for his/her behavior and must bear the consequences of that behavior. Self-discipline is one of the best lessons a child can learn!

Homework Policy

Rationale

Homework is very important because it builds responsibility and reinforces the concepts that are taught in class. Homework is not new learning but practice of already introduced skills. Homework is not designed for the child to do completely on their own. They will need an adult's supervision and in many cases, participation to complete their assignments. The more that you participate in your child's education, the more he or she will get out of their education. So have fun spending time together and learning together.

Expectations

In the 2nd grade, each child will have homework each day, at least Monday to Thursday. Homework will be approximately 10 to 20 minutes per evening. These minutes are based on the time estimated for an average child working at an average pace. Your child may spend more or less time. In addition to the 20 minutes per evening, I ask that your read to your child nightly. Research and my own personal experience have taught me that children who like to read are the children who are read to on a regular basis.

Every Friday, your child will bring home a book (library book) along with a book report form. Please ensure that your child reads his/her book over the weekend and completes the assignment. This book report project will count as 10% of the quarter's grade.

What if your child is absent?

If your child cannot come to school then they are not well enough to do their homework either. Let them rest! They will get the number of days they were out to make up the assignments. If they are going to be out for an extended period of time, please contact me so that I can make the proper arrangements.

How can you help your child with their homework?

Have a quiet and comfortable place for them to sit down and do their work without distractions.
Participate and support your child but do not do their homework for them!
Read the directions to them, and then restate the directions in your own words.
Give examples not found in the assignment.
Have resources available like a dictionary, pencils, paper, etc.

Dear Parents,

I am pleased to take this opportunity to meet you and welcome your child to my class! A good learning experience is built on cooperative effort between parent, child, and teacher. My expectations for conduct and standards for academic growth are high. With your participation in and out of the classroom, we can look forward to a productive, creative, and fun year together!

I highly encourage parent participation in the classroom because it provides opportunity for more children to receive one-on-one attention. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know. The more specialized help students receive in class, the more they will learn.
